S.M.S. Adler, a gun vessel, was launched in 1883, and cost £44,047. She had a displacement of 884 tons, was 177 ft. 2 ins, in length with a 32 ft. 10 in. beam, her draft being 11 ft. 6 in. With a composite built hull and a single screw, her armament consisted of two 15 cm. 31/2-ton breech-loading rifled guns and two 12 cm. 27 cwt. similar type guns. Engines of 724 i.h.p. gave her a speed of 11 knots. The 5 sene stamp shows her lying on the reef after the typhoon.

Built as an iron gunboat under yard No 7 by the Kaiserliche Werft at Kiel for the Imperial German Navy.
1882 Laid down.
03 November 1883 launched as the SMS ADLER (Eagle), not any sisters ships.
Displacement 880 ton standard, 1,040 full load, dim. 61.8 x 8.8 x 4.02m. (draught maximum) Length bpp. 58.1m.
Powered by a coal fired double expansion steam engine, 950 hp, speed 11.3 knots.
Range by a speed of 9 knots, 2,000 mile. Bunker capacity 110 ton coal
Barquentine rigged, sail area 847 m³.
Armament: 5 – 12.5 cm, 5 – 3.7 cm guns.
Crew 133.
27 May 1884 commissioned. Building cost 881,000 R Mark.

She was built for service in the German colonies in Africa and Pacific.
05 September 1888 she shelled Manono Island and Apolima Island, Samoa, which were strongholds of Malietoa’s forces.
16 March 1889 while at anchor in the entrance to Apia Harbour, Samoa during a cyclone which was passing the island her anchors started to drag and she was driven on the reef where she capsized.
20 Men of her crew drowned and the ship was a total loss.
