Maiden voyage: Liverpool—Queenstown—New York on November 16, 1907.
In November 1907 she won the Blue Riband from her sister Lusitania by making the run from Ambrose Lighthouse to Queenstown in 4 days, 22 hours and 29 minutes at a speed of 23.69 knots. She lost the title back to her sister, but regained it permanently in July 1909 eastbound with a crossing of 4 days, 17 hours and 20 minutes at a speed of 25.89 knots. Commissioned as a transport in August 1914 and was later used as a hospital ship. Laid up at Greenock, Scotland, between 1916 and 1917 and transported American troops in late 1917. Decommissioned in May 1919 and resumed services on June 27, 1919, from Southampton to New York.
Damaged by fire at Southampton on July 25, 1921, she was repaired and fitted for oil fuel. Re-entered service on March 25, 1922, from Southampton to Cherbourg and New York with a call at Plymouth eastbound.
In 1931 her hull was painted white and she was sent cruising. The following year she made only five transatlantic voyages. On September 26, 1934, the day the Queen Mary was launched, the Mauretania made her last voyage from New York—Plymouth—Cherbourg—Southampton and was withdrawn from service in October.
Sold to Metal Industries on April 2 1935, for scrapping. The Mauretania left Southampton on July 1, 1935, for Rosyth, Scotland, to be broken up — her departure being broadcast by radio. The Mauretania had been, through the years, the most popular ship among the general public to sail on the North Atlantic Ferry. She had held the Blue Riband for 22 years ; her speed increasing as she aged with a record of 27.65 knots in 1929. She was well known as 'The Grand Old Lady'. The Mauretania exercised an eminence that no other liner could ever assume since her long mourned absence. It was a shame she could not have had a more regal death.
