BALMORAL CASTLE. Passenger. Built by Fairfield SB & Eng. Co. Ltd. on the Clyde for Union Castle Mail Steamship Co Ltd. Launched 13 Nov 1909. Completed Feb 1910 L570' (173.74m) B64'6" (19.61m) Dr31'5" Dp38'9" (11.81m) 13,363Gt 7,512Nt .
Two sets quadruple expansion engines 2,234 nhp (12500ihp) 2 screws 14knt (17 max.) 2 funnels. 2 masts. 10 boilers. Coal bunkerage 3760tn.
Sister EDINBURGH CASTLE.
Passengers 810 in 3 classes, 320 First; 220 Second and 270 Third class.
Largest ship of the Line. First Cape liner to be fitted with wireless telegraphy (Feb. 1910) Entered Southampton-South Africa mail service. Carried the Duke of Connaught to South Africa for the opening of Parliament. Masts and funnels painted yellow for the voyage.
In Oct 1910 temporarily commissioned into the Royal Navy and manned by naval personnel in order to carry members of the Royal Family for the inauguration of the newly formed Union of South Africa. At the outbreak of WWI chartered as a Troopship carrying American troops across the Atlantic. Returned to mail service 1919 and passenger accommodation changed to 120 First 68 Second and 230 Third class passengers. In 1939 passenger capacity was given as 307 first, 230 third and 206 Tourist class. Sold May 1939 for breaking up Newport, Mon. for about £37,000 - Staffa 1974. Local issue 30p. NC (LB 5/128. Woad.
