Maroc
The 40f Morocco Stamp, clearly shows the name Maroc on the ship's bows. This name was given to the Compagnie Generale Transatlantique liner Ville de Marseille for a short period while on the Company's service between France and Morocco, and may have been the inspiration for the stamp design. It is the C.G.T. funnel, of course on the stamp but whether the Ville de Marseille actually looks like the stamp illustration I am unable to say. The Ville de Marseille was built in 1951 by the Societe des Forges and Chantiers de la Mediterranee, at La Seyne, and has a gross tonnage of 9,576, net 4,486, deadweight 1,865, on dimensions 466 ft. by 64 ft. by 20 ft. 2ins. She is a twin-screw, turbine steamship, of 21 knots, fitted for oil fuel, and is a cargo vessel. The stamp seems to me to be a rather crude impression of a passenger liner.
Sea Breezes Oct 1969.
