ROSALIE

Post by aukepalmhof » Mon Aug 17, 2009 8:58 pm

Of the big French vessel ROSALIE or sometimes given as ROSSINI the following I got from the net.
The Maritime Museum at Greenwich did give for the vessel built in 1838 of 222 tons. Not sure of she vanished or was found derelict.
In the London Times of 6 Nov. 1840 is given:
The ROSALIE a large French ship bound from Hamburg to Havana abandoned ship no clue to an explanation. Most of the sails set. No leak. Valuable cargo.
There was a half starved canary in a cage.
In the book Mysteries of the unexplained from Reader Digest:
Lloyds of London has a record for the ROSSINI for the time involved; it was a large French vessel on route from Hamburg to Havana. It was loaded with wines, fruit and silks. It ran aground in the Bahama Channel on August 3rd 1840. All hands were rescued and the ship was later towed in by a salvage company (I never have heard that in that time there was a salvage company, looks more somebody who found the ship brought her in).
There is mention of “curious circumstances” but no detail as to what they might be is given.

Fate of the vessel unknown.
