FUNCHAL passenger ship 1961

Built as a passenger/cargo vessel under yard No 353 by Skibsvaerft og Maskinbyggeri (Elsinore Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd.), Helsingør, Denmark for the Empresa Insulana de Navagaçao, Lisbon.
July 1960 keel laid down.
10 February 1961 launched under the name FUNCHAL.
Tonnage 10.031 grt, 2.975 dwt, dim. 152.68 x 19.05 x 6.33m. (draught)
Powered by two Parsons geared stem turbines, 12.250 shp., twin screws, speed 20 knots.
Passenger accommodation for 80 first, 156 tourist class A, 164 tourist class B, and 100 deck passengers.
11 October 1961 completed. Building cost under £2 million.

She was a replacement of the LIMA built in 1907, and after delivery placed in the Lisbon, Madeira to Azores service. Making also some cruise voyages.
From November 1972 till April 1973 refitted in a cruise vessel by the Nederlandse Dok en Scheepsbouw Mij at Amsterdam, one deck added, and her Parsons turbine replaced by two 9-cyl. Stork-Werkspoor diesels, 9.860hp. (7.356kW), speed 17 knots.
Tonnage 9.470 grt, 3.346 net, 2.975 dwt.
Passenger accommodation for 442 passengers in one class.
1974 Transferred to Companhia Portuguesa de Transportes Maritimes.
11 July 1984 in collision outside Molde, Norway with the Norwegian coaster STORHAUG, who got severe damage and was later declared a total constructive loss.
1985 Chartered out to the Greek Epiritiki Lines, and the FUNCHAL was transferred to the Arcalia Shipping Co., Panama.
1993 Her owner given as Great Warwick, Panama.
2001 Her port of registry given as Madeira.
2008 As given by http://www.equasis.org IMO No. 5124162, owner Great Warwick Inc., Panama, and managed by Arcalia Shipping Co. Ltd, Lisbon, Portugal.
2012 Under Portuguese flag and registry, same owner, managed by World Cruises Agency, Lisbon, Portugal.

2020 Laid up at Lisbon.
