A Kuwait dhow of the boom (or bum) type which has a long teakwood nose. A large dhow of 115 net tonnage with a length of 125ft.
Owned by its master, Ali Nasir it trades anwhere in the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman and Zanzibar etc.
It has carried as many as 260 passengers, pilgrims going to Jidda (the port of Mecca.) There are no Board of Trade rules for Arab dhows and every inch of space is utilised and the passenger is never right.
The noted author, Alan Villiers, a veteran of square-rigged ships, sailed with the BAYAN when he was making a survey of lateen sails.

115 ton net, length sternpost to bow (not including stempost or rudder) 104ft.; overall length 125 ft.; extreme beam 29 ft. 3 inch.; depth of hold 9 ft,6 inch,; depth, main deck to keel, 10 ft, 6 inch. At the time Villiers joined the BAYAN she was four years old and had cost 12,000 rupees to build.
Crew some twenty-odd men.
