The ship SUMATRA was built (of wood) at Whitehaven in 1858. Her first owner was Brocklebank who sold her to Karran in 1875. Until 1875 she was registered at Liverpool. Karran re-registered her at Castletown. In 1862 she sailed from Liverpool to India and this seems to have been a regular run while under the Brocklebank flag. When built she was 773 tons net. In 1880 she was 774 tons net and also 774 gross. She measured 172.4ft. x 32ft. x 20.8ft, and her signal flags were: P.K.C.J.
The SUMATRA seems to have been converted to barque rig as an economy measure.

1884 To A. F. Braga at Montevidio, Uruguay and renamed in CARLA B.
1887 Sold to Chr. Möller at Christiania (Oslo) renamed CLARA.
22 January 1901 lost near Esbjerg, Denmark.
