MAGICIENNE HMS 1778

Built as a frigate at Arsenal Toulon for the French Navy.
07 February 1777 ordered.
06 August 1777 laid down.
01 August 1778 launched as MAGICIENNE the lead ship of her class of twelve.
Tonnage 967 ton (bm), dim. 44.2 x 11.2 x 5.2m.
Armament: 28 – 12 pdr. and 6 – 6pdr. guns.
Crew 220.
October 1778 commissioned.

After commissioned a unit of Admiral Comte d’ Orvilliers fleet. Under command of Captain Brun de Boades.
02 July 1781 taken by HMS CHATHAM off Boston, Mass. after a battle of 30 minutes she struck her flag with the loss of 30 men killed and 86 wounded.
1782 Commissioned as HMS MAGICIENNE under command of Captain Thomas Graves on the North America Station.
December 1782 to Jamaica.
September 1783 decommissioned, and fitted out for ordinary at Chatham.30 October 1783.
September 1790 till February 1793 under repair at Harwich, then fitted out at Chatham till May 1793.
March 1793 recommissioned under command of Captain George Martin.
25 August 1793 sailed for Jamaica.
January 1796 Captain William Ricketts took over command.
21 May 1796 sailed for the Mediterranean.
01 November 1796 took the ship La CERF VOLANT off San Domingo.
Between January and March 1797 she took four privateers under which the brig Le POISSON VOLANT (12 guns) under command of Lieutenant Camau, at Cape Roxo, San Domingo .
27 December 1797 she and others took the privateer Le BRUTUS (9 guns) off Puerto Rico.
Between 1798 and 1801 under command of Captain William Ogilvy.
Late 1798 took the Spanish privateer JULIE.
17 November 1800 her ship boats destroy the French 20 gun corvette RÉOLAISE in Port Navalo and she capture a merchant vessel.
1801 In service in the North Sea, thereafter in Rear Admiral Sir Rober Calder’s squadron for the pursuit of Gantaume’s fleet.
May 1802 under command of Captain Henry Vansittrart.
June 1803 under command of Captain Adam Mackenzie.
26 February 1805 sailed for Jamaica as escort of a convoy.
She took in the Mona Passage, West Indies the El CARMEN (2 guns) on 25 January 1806.
06 February 1806 took part in the Battle of San Domingo between a British squadron under Vice Admiral Duckworth and a French squadron, two French ships did run ashore and three were taken.
Later that year decommissioned.
Between November 1807 and January 1809 under repair in Woolwich.
December 1808 recommissioned under command of Captain Lucius Curtis.
23 May 1809 sailed for the Cape of Good Hope and then to the East Indies.
29 December 1809 recaptured the East Indiaman WINDHAM.
July 1810 took part in the capture of Ile Bourbon.
24 August 1810 grounded and burnt to prevent capture by the French forces after the Battle of Grand Port, she lost in this battle 8 men and 20 wounded.
