Le WINKELREID

Steam navigation around the year 1870 was principally in the hands of three companies, Helvetie, Aigle and Leman on the Genfersee (Lake Geneva). The three jointly placed an order for the paddle steamer WINKELRIED by Escher-Wyss in Zurich.
07 July 1870 launched as the WINKELRIED.
Tonnage 260 ton, dim. 59.24 (bpp) x 6.8m., over boxes 13.05m., draught amidships 1.50m empty 1.76m loaded.
Powered by a vertical oscillating 2-cyl. compound wet steam engine.850 hp., speed 28.5 km/h.
Two funnels.
Passengers 1,100, crew 12.

When completed in 1871 was she the first semi-saloon paddle steamer and at that time the largest craft in Switzerland.

March 1871 she transported the largest part of Charles Demis Bourbaki forces for detainment (ca. 14,000 men) from Morges to Geneva.

1893 Fitted out with electric airfans.
1896 Four new boilers built in and reconstruction of engine.
1905 Wheelhouse raised.
1909 Fitted out with an engine telegraph.
1918 Sold for scrapping.
