Post by aukepalmhof » Wed Dec 01, 2010 8:19 pm

The features shown in the block are on a blue background, and are taken from the life of Amerigo Vespucci. These include maps, letters and panoramic views of Florence (Italy) and Arraial do Cabo (Brazil). At the bottom, to the left, there is an image of the Our Lady of the Remedies, from 1506, which was built out of mud slapped onto a wooden framework and was the first church to hold mass in Brazil together with the Amerigo Vespucci Obelisk, on Praia dos Anjos, which marks the place where the first Portuguese armada landed in 1503. At the bottom, to the right, there is the Gateway to Arraial do Cabo and the logo of the Year of Italy in Brazil, which will take place in 2011. The upper stamp portrays the Florentine sailor Amerigo Vespucci as a young man, and the lower stamp, shows him in his later years, when he was already known as the tamer of the New World and had also become famous for his tales of the newly-discovered lands. The stamps also feature typical 15th and 16th century sailing vessels.
Vectors graphics, photography and computer graphics techniques were used.
The ship depict in the top stamp is the Italian training vessel AMERIGO VESPUCCI of 1931. The lower stamp shows a ship of the time of Amerigo Vespucci.
