The stamp has the inscription of “oorlogschip 1840” (warship 1840), but she shows us a war junk from China from circa 1840.
The Imperial Chinese used many junks as warship which were fitted out with carronades and other weapons, to defend their coast and rivers and fight pirates and rebels.
During the Ming Dynasty more as 3000 war junks were in service, brightly painted hulls and with flags to show to which part of the navy they did belong.
The larger were wind-powered stepping two bamboo masts with square bamboo batten sails, or she were rowed
In the 19th century many battles were fought by the French, American and British navies against the war junks in the First Opium War, Second Opium War and between.
But she became ineffective against the modern western warships during the mid-19th century and she disappeared around 1900.
An image of the ship you can find also in the book, Ship, 5,000 Years of Maritime Adventure by Brian Lavery, the stamp design is reversed and some flags are missing.
