Landing Ship Logistic (LSL). length 416ft. Beam 59.5ft. Sir Class.
Built by Stephens 1967. Tonnage 4,500. Speed 17knts. Diesel powered. Pennant No. L3027.
Joined RFA service in 1970, previously operated by the Army.
Designed as a multi purpose and heavy vehicle carrier with bow and stern ramps. Helicopters can be operated from the tank deck.
All six other class took part in the Falklands 1982 campaign. Sir Geraint left the UK on 6 April 1982 with 450 Royal marines, tons of stores and three gazelle helicopters.
Took part in Operation Sutton - the recapture of the Falklands - 21 May, unloading troops in San Carlos waters, then in the waters of port Stanley for Operation Corporate -- the ending.
During the whole period she constantly refuelled helicopters and on one day alone issued 45 tons of aviation fuel.
Sir Geraint gained the Battle Honour “Falklands 1982”.
