Peacock USS 1882

USS PEACOCK was a Sloop of War built at the New York Navy Yard in 1882 she was commissioned 1 November 1828.
The second ship of the name in the US Navy.
Her tonnage was 559tn. with a Length of 188'9". Beam of 31'6" and a Draught of 15'6". Armament consisted of Eight 20pdr and Two 9pdr guns. She sailed to the west Indies on her maiden voyage to protect American ships. staying there from 26 September 1829 to 25 April 1831,after which she returned to Boston.
March 1832 she sailed to Brazil. From there she went to Siam for a treaty and another one with the Sultan of Muscat (Arabia) accompanied with USS BOXER.
She returned to America and was laid up at New York on 31 May 1834.
Her second voyage to the Far East was on 25 April 1835 accompanied by USS ENTERPRISE, sailing to Siam and Muscat again.
During this voyage she struck a reef in the south of the Persian Gulf pulling free after 61 hours. She arrived at Norfolk 2 November 1837 for overhaul.
In August 1838 he became one of the five ships in the Wilkes' Expedition which explored 1800 miles of the
coast of Antarctica and 280 islands in the Pacific, including the Marshall Islands from 18 August 1838 to July 1842.
On 30 January 1840 the Continent of Antarctica was seen after which she sailed to the Pacific. Unfortunately
she did not reach the end of the expedition being wrecked off cape Dissapointment (Oregon coast US) on 1 July 1841.
The PEACOCK and Lieut. Charles Wilkes is also depicted on the USA 25c. issue of 1988.
According to Gibbons the USA stamp shows the POLAR STAR, but Wilkes did not use a ship with that name. Anyone have any information about this?
