SUTHERLAND HMS 1997

Built as a Type 23 guided-missile frigate under yard No 1045 by Yarrow Shipbuilders, Scotstoun, Scotland for the Royal Navy.
14 October 1993 keel laid down.
09 March 1996 launched as the HMS SUTHERLAND (F81), christened by Lady Christina Walmsley, wife of Sir Robert Walmsley KCB. She is one of the Duke-class.
Displacement 3,500 ton standard, 4,200 ton full load. Dim. 132.99 x 16.10 x 7.29. (draught).
Powered GODLAG with four each 2,025 shp Paxman Valenta 12 CM diesel generators powering two GEC electric motors delivering 4,000 shp. Two Rolls-Royce Spey SM1A delivering 31,100 shp, twin shafts, speed 28 knots. When powered only diesel electric her speed is 15 knots.
Range 7,800 mile by a speed of 15 knots.
Armament: Two quadruple Harpoon launchers, total 8 harpoons SSMs. Two Sea Wolf GWS26 VLS for a total of 32 missiles. Two twin 12.75 inch torpedo tubes for Stingray ASW torpedoes, she carried 24 torpedoes.
1 – 4.5 inch MK 8 DP gun. 2 – DS 30B 30mm AA guns. Two CIWS, and Seagnat and DFL 3 decoy launchers.
Carried one Merlin MH1 helicopter.
Crew 186.
04 July 1997 commissioned. Homeport HMNB Devonport, Plymouth.

Deployed during the winter of 1998/1999 in the Falkland Islands.
2000 Part of the task force NTG2000, the first time Royal Navy ships have circumnavigated the globe since 1986.
2001 She visited Pitcairn Island carrying the Governor of Pitcairn, Martin Williams and his wife Sue. Together with RFA BAYLEAF, the SUTHERLAND made a two day visit enabling the Governor to attend official engagements.
In December 2007, major upgrades worth £35 million were announced. When this upgrades are completed she make the HMS SUTHERLAND the most powerful frigate in the Royal Navy fleet.

2010 Took part in the multi national navy exercise AURUGA 2010 in the Western Atlantic.
2011 In service.
