Grossherzogin Elisabeth (1901)

The Grossherzogin Elisabeth (I notice that there is only one "s" in the stamp design, a gross error!) is depicted on the Gs.20 Paraguay value after a painting by Hans Bohrdt (1857-1945). This steel full‑rigged ship was the first German cadet ship, a flush‑decked vessel of 1,260 tons. She was built in 1901 by J.C. Tecklenborg, at Geestemunde, for the Deutscher Schul SchiffVerein. Gross tonnage was 1,260, and length 223 ft. 6 in., breadth 39 ft. 4 in., depth 20 ft. 9 in. She was painted white, was beautifully maintained and perfectly sparred, a good example of what a small cadet‑ship should be. Until the end of the last war she was stationed at Oldenburg. After the war she was taken over by France as reparations and is now renamed by the French Navy as the Duc d'Alsace (can anyone verify this?), with a permanent home base in Brest Harbour.
