HOOKER or HOWKER

In Dutch HOEKER was a small- to medium sized vessel used from the middle ages until the 19th century and mostly in the Netherlands, first as a fishing vessel later also as merchantmen.
The first time she is mentioned in the Netherlands was in 1269 under the name HECKRE later as HOECK-SCEPE (hook-vessel)
First a small open boat but during the 16th century fully decked, and rigged with a hooker rig.
At that time a flat stern but during the 17th century the stern was rounded.
When used as a fishing vessel she had a fish well.
When used a merchantmen sailed mostly as convoy ship or as privateer and pirate.
Armament 6 – 14 guns.
Was also used by the VOC for the trade to the Dutch East Indies.
When used for fishing she mostly had a length of 20 metres, and as merchantmen ca. 30 metre.
The larger hookers as seen on the stamp carried three masts, one foremast stepped close to the bow was square rigged, two or three jibs ran out of the long reeving bowsprit. Mainmast square rigged, and the mizzen mast lateen rigged.
