The side-wheeler CITY OF CAIRO was built by the yard of Howard in Jeffersonville, Ind. for the Anchor Line.
1882 Launched as CITY OF CAIRO.
Dim. 271 x 44 x 8.5ft.
Powered by a steam engine, steam was supplied by five boilers.
Paddle-wheels with a diameter of 34’.
The Anchor Line was a river steamboat company that operated a fleet of ships on the Mississippi River between St Louis, Missouri and New Orleans, Louisiana.
The CITY OF CAIRO was usually used in the service from St. Louis to Vicksburg under command of Capt. A.S. Lightner.
She was awarded by the Anchor Line the roof bell from EMMA C ELLIOTT for making the fastest run in this service.
27 May 1896 the CITY OF CAIRO was destroyed during the St. Louis Tornado.
