VOLUNTEER yacht 1887

The Yacht a centreboard compromise sloop was built by Pusey & Jones Shipbuilding Company at Wilmington, Delaware for General Charles J. Paine, a member of the New York Yacht Club.
Designed by Edward (Ned) Burgess.
1887 Launched as the VOLUNTEER .
Displacement 130 tons, dim. 32.91 x 7.06 x 3.04 (draught), length on waterline 26.10m
Cutter rigged. Sail area 834.40m²
Solid ballast 55 tons.
She was built as steel hulled yacht with a deck made of white pine.
Building time 66 days.

September 1887 a defender race was held between the VOLUNTEER and the MAYFLOWER which was won by the VOLUNTEER and the VOLUNTEER was the defender in the America Cup against the challenger THISTLE a Scottish yacht owned by James Bell and syndicate.

The America cup races took place off New York from 27 to 30 September 1887.
The VOLUNTEER under skipper Henry C. Hall and the THISTLE under skipper John Barr.
Both races on 27 and 30 September were easily won by the VOLUNTEER, the first race she beat the THISTLE by 19 minutes and 23 seconds, and the second race by 11 minutes and 48 seconds.

Soon after the Cup the Eastern Yacht Club Commodore J.Malcolm Forbes bought the VOLUNTEER.
1891 Her rigging was altered to a schooner rig.
1906 She was bought by Henry Forbes.
1909 Bought by Charlie Barr a three time America’s Cup winning skipper.
1910 Skipper Barr sails the VOLUNTEER to a New York junkyard where it is broken up.
