VIGILANT yacht 1893

Built as a centerboard sloop built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company of Bristol, Rhode Island for a syndicate headed by C. Oliver. The yacht was designed by Nathanael Greene Herreshoff.
14 June 1893 launched as VIGILANT.
Displacement138 tons, dim. 38.50 x 7.92 x 3.96m. (draught), length on waterline 25.90m.
Sail area 1040.50m²
She was constructed with a steel hull; the underwater hull was made of Tobin bronze.
1893 Completed.

The VIGILANT won the 1893 America Cup selection trials she beat the American yachts COLONIA, JUBILEE and PILGRIM.

Then she was the defender of the America Cup races off New York against the VALKYRIE II skippered by William Granfield and a crew of 70, the race was sailed from 7 to 13 October 1893.
The VIGILANT sailed under skipper William Hansen.
All three races were won by the VIGILANT, the first she won with a margin of 8 minutes 48 seconds, the second by 10 minutes 35 seconds and the third by 40 seconds in corrected time.

1894 The VIGILANT was sold to Howard Gould, The yacht was the first defender to sail to Europe to race the British yachting season.
There she raced sixteen times against the British yacht BRITANNIA where the VIGILANT was beaten twelve times by the British yacht in the Solent between the mainland and the Isle of Wight.

1895 She raced the elimination trials for America’s Cup defense which was won by the yacht DEFENDER.

Between 1896 and 1906 she had five different owners and was only used as a pleasure yacht for cruising.
1906 Was she bought by William Iselin who used her again for racing until 1910.
1910 Sold to a junkyard in New London, where she was broken up the same year.
