DEFENDER yacht 1895

Built as sloop with all-metal construction, steel hull with an aluminium deck built by Herreshoff Manufacturing Company, Bristol, Rhode Island, U.S.A. for William Kissam Vanderbilt, Edwin Dennison Morgan and Charles Oliver Iselin members of the New York Yacht Club.
29 June 1895 launched as the DEFENDER.
Displacement 151.5 tons, dim. 37.50 x 7.03 x 5.81m. (draught), length on waterline 27.17m.
Sail area 1134,30m².
Ballast 85 tons lead.
The yacht was designed by Nathanael Greene Herreshoff.
During the defence selection August 1895 she sails against the VIGILANT, VOLUNTEER and JUBILEE in the final race the DEFENDER under skipper Henry C. Haff sails against the VIGILANT under skipper Charlie Barr, she makes two easy wins against the VIGILANT and is selected to defend the America Cup against the British yacht VALKYRIE III.
The 9th America Cup races are held from 7 to 12 September 1895 in the waters off New York.
The VALKYRIE sails under skipper William Cranfield.
07 September the first race took place where the DEFENDER beats VALKYRIE III by 8 minutes and 49 seconds on corrected time.
10 September in the second race the DEFENDER is beaten by the VALKYRIE by 47 seconds, but the VALKYRIE III is disqualified due to a collision on the start line, VALKYRIE III the end of her boom raked DEFENDER’s deck and snatching the starboards shrouds of the DEFENDER crosstrees, and it snapped the topmast stay. DEFENDER is awarded the win.
The last race is on 12 September where the DEFENDER beats the VALKYRIE III after the VALKYRIE crossed the start line, but immediately retires and dropped her racing flag. The DEFENDER sailed out the race and was the winner.
After the win of the America Cup the DEFENDER is towed to New Rochelle where she stays for four years without racing.
During this time electrolysis set in between the steel hull and the aluminium deck, at that time not much was known over this corrosion, but the yacht slowly melted away.
1899 Bought by J. Pierpont Morgan and W. Buttler Duncan where after the yacht was rebuild by the Herreshoff’s Bristol yard. To use her as a trial horse for the 1899 America’s Cup.
After the selection trials, DEFENDER returns to its mooring.
1901 She is broken up.
