CAIQUE DO ALGARVE

Used on the Portuguese coast from Algarve to north of the Tagus River, but mostly used from the port of Algarve.
Some are used for fishing of bonito off Morocco, other carry cargo along the coast.
Carvel planked with a slightly curved stem with tall stemhead; most transom sterned. Deep keel with drag; steep floors high sheers.
Decked with 3-4 hatches or decked forward and aft with an open waist.
Mostly painted reddish brown, with contrasting bands, and an oculi painted just below de gunwale.
Outboard rudder, rudder stock comes up through the counter on counter-sterned type.
Two pole mast which sets generally tall quadrilateral lateen sails-type sails, during bad weather a loose-footed gaff or triangular storm sail on the aftermast. During calms rowed.
Cargo CAIQUES have a crew of 5, while fishing CAIQUES can carry up to 25-30 men 2 boys and 2 water dogs to retrieve unhooked fish.
Reported lengths 15 – 18m. e.g. 17.5 x 4.7 x 1.56m.
