Built as a galleon in Venice for the at that time Republic of Venice in approx. 1550.
Launched as the SANTISSIMA MADRE.
Displacement 722 tons, dim. 41.5 x 5.9 x 3.52m.
Armament 38 guns.
Crew 230.

Venice, which had been a great maritime power in the Mediterranean from the 13 to15th century, while her power declined significantly during the 16th century.
The republic was building large war ships to protect its important trade routes.
One of the last great ship of the Republic of Venice was the SANTISSIMA MADRE.
The ship was built with smooth lines, but almost without decorations.
The captains cabin between the third and second deck in the stern had a maximum height of 1.84m.
The sailors accommodation did have a height of 1.64m, while the accommodation for the pilot, officers and boatswain was even worse, which was a small passage with a height of 1.42m.
The mast were made from one piece of a tree, and fitted out with fighting platforms, from where the ship could be defended with light arms.
The foremast was stepped forward, and square rigged also the mainmast, while the mizzen and Bonaventure were lateen rigged. On the bow she carried a spritsail.
