Built as a wooden gabarre in Le Havre for the French Navy.
August 1793 keel laid down.
12 September 1795 launched as the La MENAÇANTE one of the Salamandre class.
Tonnage 400 tons, dim. 39.0 x 8.8 x 3.7m. (draught)
February 1796 commissioned.
The gabarre was used by the French navy as a seagoing vessel, and often used to carry ship timbers to its dockyards. She were built with a robust hull and had a large cargo capacity. The gabarre was known for his good sea-keeping qualities, but mostly also known as slow sailers.
She were very suitable for exploring expeditions.
June 1800 was she renamed NATURALISTE and fitted out for an expedition to New Holland (Australia).
Under command of Jacques Félex Emmanuel Hamelin she left together with the GÉOGRAPHE for the southern waters.

She returned in France in 1803.
1810 decommissioned and sold.
Fate unknown.
