CLEARWATER Hudson River sloop

Built as sloop by Harvey Gamage Shipyard in South Bristol, Maine for the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, Inc. at Beacon, New York.
October 1968 laid down, as a replica of the vessels that once were a much common sight on the Hudson River. In 1810 around 206 sloops sailed on the Hudson.
17 May 1969 launched as the CLEARWATER.
Displacement 70 tons. Dimensions 32 x 7, 6 x 2,4m. (draught).
One Cummins auxiliary engine ?hp
Single mast. Gaff sloop rig, total sail area 387.5m².
Built of wood, the keel, keelson and frames are made of oak, while the planking consist of fir and pine with steel fasteners.
Figurehead a Canadian goose.
Accommodation for 18 crew and volunteers and 50 guests.
1969 Completed based at Poughkeepsie, New York.

1969 she made her maiden voyage from the shipyard to New York.
The sloop fitted out with a centreboard is specially designed for variable winds, currents and depths in the Hudson River.
She travels to towns and cities along the Hudson River, New York Harbor and Long Island Sound and the crew give educational programs to school groups and to heighten public awareness of the Hudson River’s unique ecosystem.
When a member you can join the crew as a volunteer for a week, and she is also for charter by private parties.
2009 Based at Beacon.
2011 In service, during the winter laid up.
