Built as a ironclad central battery ship by Arsenal Lorient at Lorient for the French Navy.
Keel laid down, have three different dates: December 1872, 10 July 1873 and 18 July 1873.
18 September 1876 launched as the REDOUTABLE.
Displacement: 9.430 ton. Dim. 100.7 x 19.76 x 7.8m. (draught).
Powered by one horizontal reciprocating connecting rod steam engine, 6,200 ihp, one shaft, speed 14.7 knots.
Bunker capacity 620 ton coal.
Full rigged, sail area 24,000 sq. ft..
Armament : 8 – 10.8 inch model 1875, 6 – 5.5 inch model 1870, 12 – 1 pdr. guns and 2 – 14 inch torpedo tubes.
Crew 705.
31 December 1878 commissioned.

She was the first warship in the world to use steel as the principal building material.
After commissioned a unit of the French Mediterranean Squadron.
When rearmed her bow-gun was replaced by one 10.8 inch model 1881 gun, and the battery guns by 4 – 10.8 inch model 1870 guns.
During her second rearmament the battery guns were replaced by 4 – 9.4 inch model 1881 guns.
During her final rearmament the battery guns were replaced by 30 cal. model 1884, and the 3 – 10.8 inch guns model 1875 still in the upper deck were replaced with 3 – 10.8 inch model 1893/96. Atv that time she carried also 5 – 9pdr., 14 – 3pdr, 5 – 1pdr and 5 – 1pdr revolver guns.
Later from full rigged she was Barquentine rigged as seen on the stamp.
Ultimately her sails were removed and she got two military masts as seen on the photo of the ship.
07 September 1901 she was present at the negotiation of the Treaty between the Big Powers and China (Boxer Rebellion.)
1902 Hulked.
09 March 1910 stricken from the French Navy list.
17 August 1911 sold for 100,000 francs, and 1912 broken up at Saigon.
