Guayas

In the year 2000 Ecuador issued a 68c. stamp depicting their sail training vessel, the GUAYAS a steel three masted barque of 934tns. Lengfh 257'5" oa., Hull 219', Breadth 34' 8", Depth 15'4', She was built to a design by Sener Sistemas Marinos.
She was built by Astilleros Y Talleras Celaya (ASTACE) at Bilboa, Spain, Her keel was laid on 1·6·1976 and she was launched on 22-10-1976 as a sail-training schoolship for the Ecuadorian Navy. Her fitting out was completed in 1977 and the Ecuadorian Navy took her over in July of that year.
She was the second of four sister ships built by ASTACE, the others being GLORIA (Columbia) SIMON BOLIVAR (Venezuala) and CUAHTEMOC (Mexico) GUAYAS was named after Ecuador's main river and is run by the Naval Superior School in Guayanuil. She is fitted with a 700 h.p. Auxiliary diesel motor. She has a permanent crew of 87 plus 63 cadets. Her figurehead is of an Andea Condor.
She sai!s mainly in the eastern Pacific and also in the Caribbean.
In 1980 she sailed back to Europe to take part in 'Cutty Sark' tall ship events
In 1986 she took part in 'Operation Sail New York'. The following year she took part in Australia's Bicentennial Celebrations.
In 1992 she was involved in the 'Columbus Regatta'.
She is still in full service for the Ecuadorian Navy, attending maritime events worldwide and acting all an overseas ambassador for her country.
