The Portuguese three-masted galley of India – XVI century.
The Portuguese galley was a long ship, with a low gunwale, having one or two lateen rigged masts, but could also use oars.
The three-masted galley was of the same type but displaced a larger tonnage, the gunwale was higher, the oars more numerous and the artillery more abundant. This vessel was intended to fight the naus and brave the storms.
The galley of the 16th century had at least 21 rowing benches and at least 3 oarsmen to a bench.
The largest galley had over the 250 men crew.
