MOUNT CLINTON
Steam ship. Built by the Merchant Shipbutldinq Corp. at Chester Pa. for the Shawmut Steamship Co Inc of New York., a subsidiary of the American Shipping & Commerce Navigation Corporation., later to become known as the United American Lines. Launched 8 February 1921. She was converted to carry large numbers of immigrants, her service in this capacity was brief, but in her designed role as a freighter she had a long career.
Of 7,510 Gt. with a length of 457ft overall (440ft. bp) Breadth, moulded 57ft. A Westinghouse, cross compound turbine rated at 4,200shp at 3.600rpm. comprised two elements which drove a single screw through SR gearing. Of the five boilers one was of water tube type and the other, normal single ended; their working pressures were 250 and 220psu. The service speed was 13 knots.
She was designed with the normal split superstructure of a cargo ship with two lifeboats aside and a single funnel - she was completed as shown on the stamp two funnels the after one being a dummy. Beneath the decks she had five holds served by 10 winches and 10 5-ton derricks, plus another of30 tons capacity.
Cabins for 1,500 steerage passengers were arranged on the two upper decks, cabins had two, four and six berths. Since the flow of passengers catered for was a Westward one from Europe, these cabins were designed for quick assembly and removal, so that on the Eastward run the space could be used for cargo. Another special feature was the installation of a special kitchen for kosher cooking.
She left New York on her first voyage to Hamburg, a passage normally taking 12 days. She made her last Atlantic crossing in 1923. In 1925 she was sold to the Malson Line Inc. of San Francisco and was renamed MAUNALEI. It was then, doubtless, that her dummy after funnel, accommodation and extra lifeboats were removed. Thereafter her career was linked with the carriage of sugar and pineapples from Hawaii to the USA.
In 1948 the MAUNALEI (ex MOUNT CLINTON) was sold to start a new career under the Italian flag. Renamed SANTA ROSA, registered at Genoa and owned by Piaggio & Ravano, she was resold within months to become CAPO MANARA, still registered at Genoa but owned by the Compagnia di Nav. 'steuarnarts' S, p. A. Under this name she traded for six years, her career coming to an end late in 1954 when she arrived at Yokohama to be broken up. Her sister-ship MOUNT CARROL. went to Japanese breakers in 1958.
