The Japanese junk was built from the twelfth century and is quite a different vessel from the Chinese junk.
The Japanese junk has a number of apparently archaic features, including the way in which the deck is built out in wings towards the stern, suggesting a one-time steering oar position.
She carried one large square sail on the mainmast, with a small square foresail.
She had the reputation of a poor sailer but was sturdily built and a good sea ship.
The Japanese junk built-in 1850 would not differ greatly from the vessel in service some 600 years earlier
Length around 9.8m. with a beam of 2.4m.
Crew 3.
