NORTHUMBERLAND HMS 1798

Built as a third-rate ship-of-the-line by Mrs. Frances Barnard (yes a lady shipbuilder) at Deptford Green Drydock for the Royal Navy.
30 April 1795 ordered.
October 1795 keel laid down.
02 February 1798 launched as the HMS NORTHUMBERLAND one of the Northumberland class, one sister the HMS RENOWN.
Tonnage 1,907 ton (bm), dim. 55 x 14.82 x 6.58m.
Armament when built: Lower deck 30 – 32 pdr., upper deck 30 – 24 pdr., quarter deck 4 – 18 pdr. + 10 – 32 pdr., forecastle 2 – 18 pdr. + 2 – 32 pdr. carronades, roundhouse 6 – 18 pdr. guns.
Crew 640.
15 March 1798 completed at the yard at Deptford.
April 1798 commissioned under command of Capt. Edward Ownen.
18 May 1798 fitted out at Woolwich.
October 1798 as flagship of Vice-Admiral Sir John Colpoys sailed for the Mediterranean, at that time she was under command of George Martin.
June 1799 in the Mediterranean she joined the squadron of Rear-Admiral Sir John Duckworth.
1800 Blockade of Malta.
18 February 1800 captured the French ship Le GÉNÉREUX.
24 August 1800 NORTHUMBERLAND with the HMS GENEREUX and SUCCESS captured the French 42 gun ship La DIANA off Malta.
1801 Served in the Egypt operations. 08 March took part in the Aboukir Bay landings, in which she lost three seamen and four wounded.
June 1803 was she in the English Channel fleet.
1805 As flagship of Rear Admiral Cochrane at the blockade at Ferrol, Spain.
1805 In pursuit of Missiessy’s squadron to the West Indies.
06 February 1806 took part in the Battle of San Domingo in which she lost 21 men and 75 were wounded.
February 1808 sailed from Portsmouth for the Mediterranean.
23 November 1811 the NORTHUMBERLAND and the ARMADA captured the French privateer ketch GLANEUSE from St Malo, armed with 14 guns and 85 men.
22 May 1812 destroyed off Lorient the French L’ARIANE (40 guns), L’ANDROMAQUE (40 guns) and Le MAMELOUK (16 guns). (the battle is showed on the painting and depict from the left to the right MAMELOUK, ARIANE, ANDROMAQUE and NORTHUMBERLAND.)
1813 In reserve at Chatham and under repair.
July 1815 recommissioned.
08 August 1815 as flagship of Rear-Admiral Sir George Cockburn and under command of Captain Charless Ross she sailed for St Helena with on board Napoleon Buonaparta and his suite.
15 October 1815 NORTHUMBERLAND arrived at St Helena and the next day Napoleon disembarked with his suite.
August 1816 was she flagship of Rear-Admiral Sir Charles Rowley at Sheerness.
1818 Was she guardship in the Medway.
September 1826 fitted out as lazaretto at Sheerness.
February 1827 as lazaretto at Standgate Creek, River Medway.
July 1850 broken up at Deptford.
