Empire Hope

Built by Harland & Wolff Ltd, Belfast. Launched on 27 March 1941, Completed in October 1941, GRT: 12688, Dimensions: 521.4 ft x 63 ft, Engines: Oil, Twin Screw, 16 Knots, Refrigerated capacity: 495,000 cu ft. Operated under the management of Shaw, Savill & Albion Co Ltd. Made two voyages to Australia and New Zealand. Chosen for her speed to join Operation Pedestal. On 11 August 1942 she was bombed by Junkers Ju 88 and Heinkel He 111 while a member of Convoy WS 21. Her engines were put out of action by eighteen near misses, and then two direct hit set her on fire. She was carrying kerosene, coal and explosives. The crew abandoned ship and were rescued by HMS PENN. Just before midnight on 12 August, EMPIRE HOPE was torpedoed by Italian Submarine BRONZO. The wreck was deemed a hazard to shipping and was sunk by HMS BRAMHAM off Galeta Island.
