Built as a 5th rate by Randall & Co., Rotherhithe for the Royal Navy.
20 May 1778 ordered.
11 June 1778 keel laid down.
20 April 1780 launched as the HMS ASSURANCE one of the Roebuck class.
Tonnage 898 ton, dim.42.79 x 11.64 x 5.01m., length of keel 35.08m.
Armament in 1793: lower deck 22 – 24pdr. carronades, upper deck 20 – 12pdr., quarter deck 4 – 24pdr carronades. forecastle 2 – 24pdr carronades.
Crew 280.
15 July 1780 completed.

April 1780 commissioned under command of Captain James Cumming.
27 October 1780 sailed for North America.
23 May 1781 took the American privateer DUKE OF LEINSTER.
07 June 1781 recaptured 16 gun ATALANTA in Boston Bay.
17 June 1781 took the American 10 gun privateer RATTLESNAKE.
February 1784 paid off, under repair at Sheerness from March to October 1785.
Between February and April 1791 fitted out as a troopship at Chatham.
11 May 1791 under command of Captain John Shortland sailed for Halifax with troops.
December 1791 paid off.
April 1793 recommissioned under command of Captain Velters Berkeley.
February 1794 sailed for the Mediterranean.
May 1794 sailed for the West Indies to join Jervis fleet.
September 1795 paid off at Sheerness.
From February till July 1796 again fitted out as a troopship at Chatham.
July 1796 commissioned under command of Lieutenant John Norris.
Sailed for the Mediterranean and returned home October 1798.
March 1799 fitted out as a receiving ship at Woolwich, where she remained in Ordinary until broken up there in March 1815.
