LETE-LETE

A type of ship that used for long distance trading, created and used by Madura people. They can be spotted almost at all large harbors on the North coast of Java and Madura. The most concentrated areas are in Kalimas Surabaya and Kalibaru Jakarta Harbors. Leteis considered as trading ships that transport timbers and wood to Java, especially Jakarta. Salt, rice, soybeans, corns, and dried foods are transported from Madura and Java to Kalimantan.
They are also called lete-lete, large sized between 30-80 tons, length 10-15 m, width 5 m, depth 1.5-2m. Linggi shaped timbers that are large and thick and prominent at its steering wheel. The tusks, which are in the Madura language, referred as tajuk, with thickness of 15 x 25 cm, protruding on the right and left hand sides on top of tabu-tabu, which are the hull of the ship. On the right and left hand sides of the protruding tusks, a thick and long timber is nailed across the sides of the tajuks, the timbre is called grupe. In the rudder area, there is a roofed cabin on deck of the ship. It is made of wood and bamboos that are shaped as a saddle to protect cargos and passengers. The mast is made of a large wooden otr bamboo poles and with the height of up to 12 m. The sail is shaped as trapezium, with the size of 14 x 8 m. On deck of the ship, there is also one canoe that is called pengarak canoe in the Madura language. Pengarak canoe is also called as Bunte. The hull of the ship is painted in white and colorful paints which only can be found at the gunwales of the ship and along with bright tops to the sternpost and stem of the ship.
