Small, open fishing boat of the Al Batinah coast, where it is known as a shahuf south of Majls, a baggarah or zaima near Muscat, and a zaruq near the Strait of Hormuz. Fishes mainly with a beach seine for sardine and anchovy. Sharp bow with a long, straight, raking stem, terminating in a carved and decorated stemhead. Sharp stern with a wide, multipiece sternpost that sweeps up in a truncated head; gunwale strake may extend aft of the sternpost. Short keel angles up toward the stern; maximum beam abaft amidships; low sheer; stem and sternpost may be sewn on. Narrow balanced rudder extends well below the keel and termi¬nates at the top in a point; controlled by lines from a peg on the outer edge of the rudder blade. Decked. Mainly rowed using as many as 28 oarsmen. When sailed, sets a lateen sail to a slightly forward-raking mast. Reported lengths 7.6-10.7m
