Small all-purpose boat still in use in protected waters along the mainland coast and at Zanzibar and Pemba.Often used mainly as a ship's boat, usually aboard a baghla* or ganja. Essentially a small jahazi*. Beamy, plank-built craft with a keel, a vertical or sharply raking stem, and a wineglass transom stern; hollow entrance. Often built of short planking sal¬vaged from another boat. Rudder operated with lines. Open or decked at bow and poop; sides may be raised with mat weathercloths. Usually has oculi on the bows in Zanzibar. May be rowed only, or sets a lateen sail of cheap cotton with tack extended to bowsprit. Mast stepped against a thwart and an athwartship beam lashed to the thwart. Many now fit¬ted with an engine. Crew of 2-6. Averages 7.6m in length; shallow draft.
