Built in 1867 by Barclay, Curle & Co. Ltd., Whiteinche, Glasgow, #152, for Watson Bros, Glasgow, Gt:999, 64m. x 10,70m. x 6,30m.
The BEN VENUE was a very fast sailing ship. Her end came on 14th of May 1882 when she was lying at anchor off Timaru in very bad sea and weather. Suddenly one chain parted and the ship listed to starboard and was dragged onto the rocks. Also the nearby CITY OF PERTH dragged her anchors and grounded very close to BEN VENUE but later she was refloated. The crew of BEN VENUE took over to the CITY OF PERTH.
Although 9 lives were lost whilst trying to enter the rescue boats.
