CANADA. Battleship. Built by Armstrong, Clydebank Launched 27th Nov. 1913. Laid down Nov. 1911 for Chile. Purchased for the Royal Navy on the outbreak of WW1. Completed Sept. 1915.
L661'oa. 625'pp B92'6" Dr29'mean 32'max (201.5 oa x 28.0 x 8.8 m) 28,600 tons (32,120 full load) Parsons (LP) and Brown-Curtis (HP) Turbines 21, Yarrow boilers, 4 screws 37,000 hp 22knots. Armament Ten 14" (356 mm)/45 Sixteen (later reduced to twelve) 6" (152 mm)/50. Two 3" AA. Four 3pdr (47mm) 4 submerged 21" (533 mm) TT.
Complement 1167. Sister ALMIRANTE COCHRANE, ex Chilean ALMIRANTE LATORRE (ex VALPARAISO).
In 1916 the after four 6" guns were removed and the ports plated over because they were badly affected by the blast from Q turret. Served at Jutland as part of Fourth Battle Squadron. Then transferred to 1st BS. In 1919-20 refitted at Devonport. Returned to Chile in April 1920 under her original name. Additional protection was added during the war. Her sister ship was also taken over for the Royal Navy as the aircraft carrier EAGLE. Still around in Valparaiso until 1958 -
