GYMNOTE. Submarine (French) Gustav Zede backed by Admiral Aube laid her down in April 1887. Displacement 31tn. L60'. 6' in diameter. Had a single 14" TT in the bow and was powered by a battery of 564 small accumulators. 6.5kn(surfaced) 6kn(submerged) The accumulator batteries had to be recharged by a generator ashore or from another ship. She also had water tanks for ballast which were emptied by compressed air. Vertical control proved difficult but she remained in use as a test bed into the 1900's.
