13 May 1853 Laid down as a wooden sailing frigate first class armed with 50 guns at the Arsenal Ratchet for the Spanish Navy.
But before launched she was refitted in a steam frigate.
17 November 1857 launched as the PRINCESA DE ASTURIAS, English sources give mostly the English translation PRINCESS OF ASTURIAS.
Displacement 2,800 ton, dim. 68.91 x 15.23 x 6.50m. (draught).
1859 Armament: 10 – 68 pdr., 26 – 32 pdr., 2 – 6.5 inch, and 5 small bronze cannons for the shipboats.
Powered by an auxiliary steam engine manufactured by John Penn & Son, 2,400 ihp. One screw, speed on engine 9.5 knot under sail 10.5 knot. Bunker capacity 460 ton coal maximum.

14 December 1859 commissioned in Cadiz. Building cost 4,243.81 Pesetas.
1859 A unit of the Africa Squadron for operations in Africa, and in 1860 she became the flagship of that squadron.
Took part in the bombardment of Larache and Asilah, Morocco.
1861 Based at Havana, Cuba and took part in the naval actions in Haiti when the Spanish speaking half of that island what is now Dominican Republic was annexed by Spain for four years.
Took part in the expedition to Mexico with British forces between 1861-1862 to defend the European interest there.
Then she returned to Spain where she joined the training squadron until the squadron dissolution on 12 June 1962.
Got orders to proceed to Cadiz where ex Dominican ministers boarded her and she sailed to Santo Domingo and Cuba.
17 November 1865 she returns to Spain and was replaced in its functions by Queen Isabella II.
1865 Took part in Glorious Revolution in Spain in which Queen Isabelle II was removed from power.
She was for a short while renamed in CARTAGENA, but on 13 October she was again renamed her name was shortened to ASTURIAS.
On 19 April 1870 in a rapport given by her commander at that time was she in the following state:
“She makes 15 inches of water in 24 hour, which comes from boiler leaking and perhaps not properly adjusted valves. The hull is copper sheathed and in good condition, her mast and boats and small things are in excellent condition. Boilers in a bad condition which made it impossible to make more as 5 miles (under engine power)”
When Admiral José Maria Ruiz de Apodaca Beranger became Minister of the Navy, the ASTURIAS at that time anchored in La Grana (Ferrol) was refitted in a Naval Academy, her engine was removed and most of her armament, her sides raised to make room for accommodation and classrooms.
Her displacement is then given as 1,576 ton.
1909 Was she moved back to San Fernando.
12 March 1914 her hull was sold at an auction for firewood.
