LYTTLETON HARBOUR

Tucked away in the north-west side of Banks Peninsula, on the east coast of the South Island, the site of Lyttleton Harbor was selected in 1848 by the New Zealand Co. It is 13 km from the city of Christchurch. Although it is hemmed in by volcanic hill, the port has been expanded and modernized. A tunnel through the hill permits easier access to Christchurch.

The vessel in the foreground is the LAKE ERIE.
Built as a bulk carrier under yard No 291 by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., Hiroshima, Japan for the Australian National Line.
21 October 1977 launched as the LAKE EYRE.
Tonnage 12,077 grt, 6,084 net, 16,331 dwt, dim. 148.0 x 23.12 x 8.73m., length bpp.138.0m.
Powered by one 6-cyl. 2 stroke Sulzer type oil engine manufactured by builder at Kobe. Hp?, one shaft, speed 15 knots.
24 January 1978 completed.

1984 Sold to Julia Shipping Pte., Singapore and renamed in JULIA.
2009 Sold to Sheraa Al Sharq General, Qatar and renamed QUTAR SADIO.
2011 Sold to Indian shipbreakers and for her last voyage to the breakers she carried the name TARA 1.
01 February 2011 beached at Alang and scrapped by United Shipbreaking Co.

AUSTRALIAN ENDEAVOUR the larger ship on the top of the stamp.
Built as a cellular container vessel under yard No 941 by Bremer Vulkan yard at Vegesack, Germany for Associated Container Transportation Ltd., U.K.
24 October 1968 keel laid down.
16 April 1969 launched as the ACT 3.
July 1969 sold to The Australian National Line.
30 July 1969 delivered to owners under the name AUSTRALIAN ENDEAVOUR.

10 June 1985 arrived Kaohsiung for scrapping, work commenced on 08 July 1985 by Ton Tai Steel Works Co.

ORIENTAL IMPORTER: she is the ship behind the AUSTRALIAN ENDEAVOUR.
Built as a cargo/reefer vessel under yard No 187 by Vickers Ltd., High Walker, U.K for China Mutual SN Co. Ltd., Liverpool (A. Holt & Co.)
10 January 1967 launched as the PROTESILAUS.
Tonnage 12,094 grt, 11,140 dwt. Dim. 171.9 x 23.7m., length bpp. 158.8m.
Powered by one 9-cyl B&W diesel, 22,500 bhp., speed 21 knots.
July 1967 completed.

1978 Sold to Cardbrook Shipping Ltd. (Balcombe & Co. Ltd.), Hong Kong and renamed ORIENTAL IMPORTER.
Refitted in a full container vessel and lengthened to 195.3m. Tonnage 15,002 grt, 16,310 dwt.
1979 Transferred to Panocean Shipping Co Inc., Liberia and the same year again transferred to Cardbrook Shipping Ltd., Liberia.
1981 Transferred to Flint Shipping Ltd., Liberia, under Panama flag and registry.
1981 Transferred to Island Investment & Agency Corp, Ltd & Wattling Nav Inc, Panama.

01 June 1985 struck by two rockets believed from Iranian aircraft in 28 10N 49 35E on a voyage from Damman to Kuwait. She got on fire which was extinguished the next day but declared CTL.
25 July 1985 sailed from Bahrain for Kaohsiung, where she arrived on 18 September 1985 for demolition.

Built as a tug under yard No 117 by Whangarei Engineering & Construction Ltd., Wangarei, New Zealand for the Lyttleton Harbour board at Lyttleton.
29 March 1971 launched as CANTERBURY.
Tonnage 224 grt., dim. 32.76 x 8.69 x 4.5m.
One diesel engine, 1,120 kW, single screw.
Accommodation for 2 - 4 berth cabins, 2 - 2 birth cabins and 2 - 1 berth cabins.
13 July 1971 completed.

1987 Sold to March Construction Subsidiary, New Zealand.
1999 Sold and renamed HOKIE MARU 1, Panama flag.
2013 In service and as given by http://www.equasis.org : Tonnage 253 grt, owned by Masdjan, Indonesia, under Panama flag, IMO No 7102675.

SHINSEI MARU: Watercraft Philately gives a fishing vessel built in 1970, her details are then wrongly given, the details are of the cargo vessel SHINSEI MARU, IMO No 7021716 and around 1980 she carried the name SUNBIRD.
I agree she is a fishing vessel, but it is a very common name by Japanese fishing vessels and mostly carry also a number. Have not any info on the ship.

RAPAKI Built as a floating crane under yard No 485 by Fleming & Ferguson, Paisley, U.K. for the Lyttleton Harbour Board, Lyttleton, New Zealand.
19 November 1925 launched as the RAPAKI.
Tonnage 746 grt, dim. 51.8 x 15.9m, length bpp. 48.9m
April 1926 completed.
