ERNESTINA. Schooner. Built in1894 as EFFIE M MORRISSEY by James and Tarr, Essex, Massachusetts. She was Launched on 1st February 1894.
Used as fishing vessel until 1917. Ran aground, she was refloated but neglected in Halifax. She was bought in 1924, repaired to make voyages to the Arctic, which lasted until 1941. During WW2 used as supply vessel for the US Navy.
Bought by Henrique Mences in 1948 for use as a freight passenger ship. He took her to Cape Verde and renamed her ERNESTINA. Sailed with her for 26 years, then she was decommissioned.
After an extensive refit she took part in 'Operation Sail' in 1976, during a heavy gale she lost her two masts. The Government of Cape Verde purchased and rebuilt her and gave her to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, New Bedford for use as a school ship. She arrived on 24th August 1982.
Since 1986 she has carried out voyages to the Great Lakes, Canada, Newfoundland and Coastal New Zealand. Was scheduled to undertake an 8-month voyage to the South Pacific beginning on 4 h November 1990, but fiscal problems may have kept her at home as she never made the voyage. She was overhauled at Kellys Shipyard, Fair Haven Mass. A new organisation is being put together to return her to topsail training.
