She was the lead ship built of her class of four with an option for a fifth container/cargo vessels for arctic operations.
Built under yard No 505 by Aker Warnow yard in Warnemunde, Germany for the Mining and Metallurgical Company “Norilsk Nickel Joint-Stock Company, Moscow.
05 December 2005 launched as the NORILSKIY NIKEL.
Tonnage 17,031 grt, 5,257 net, 18,095 dwt., dim. 169.04 x 23.10 x 14.20m. Length bpp. 157.7m.
Powered diesel electric by three Wärtsilä 12V32 diesel engines, each 6,000 kW, connected to one electric motor 13,010 kW. One single 13MW Azipod unit with a propeller diameter of 5.6m., speed 15.5 knots.
Four holds total capacity 19,470 m³ , container capacity 389 in holds and 259 TEU’s on deck.
Accommodation for six passengers. 18 crew and a pilot cabin.
She is fitted out with a sauna, gym and a seawater swimming pool.
Ice strengthened.
28 February 2006 completed, homeport Murmansk.
She can make voyages in ice covered seas without assistance from a icebreaker, she can break ice with a thickness of 1.5m. covered with a 20cm snow layer.
When travelling in open water or light ice conditions she is travelling bow-first, when meeting thicker ice she turns 180 degrees where after she moves stern first. Her stern is breaking the ice.
She is fitted out with a double navigation bridge facing forward and astern.
Made her trials in the Kara Sea area and after successful ice trials there she transport metallurgical products from Dudinka on the river Yenisey in Siberia to Murmansk.
