She is a special type ice breaking vessel; the design of the vessel was made between the yard and the Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. GARINKO-GO II efficiently progresses on the floe by a pair of special ice breaking rotor with Archimedean screw which are driven by the hydraulic motor powered by the high-speed diesel engine.
Tourist aboard the vessel sometimes spots seals and eagles resting on the ice. The arrival of the spring will be signalled when the ice, which extended to the coastline in the middle of January, starts to melt in late March and early April.
The GARINKO-GO II is the most popular means of winter sightseeing in Mombetsu and can carry 70 people as she breaks way trough the Sea of Okhotsk when it is covered with drift ice.
The boat operates twice a day from late January when the drift ice arrives, to mid-March breaking the ice forcefully with the big drill installed in its appealing, brightly colored orange body.
In the summer, she makes a short two-hour cruise, which visits spots off Mombetsu, where passengers can expect good fishing, mainly of flounder. The longer four-hour and seven-hour trips are popular among sea fishing lovers in Hokkaido.
Fish caught can be sent home via parcel delivery service after leaving the ship.
