The Sand Lance was a Balao Class submarine built at Portsmouth Navy Yard in June 1943. Weighing 1826 tons and measuring 311ft long with a beam of 27ft. Four Diesels and 4 electric motors gave her a speed of 20 knots. Arms were 10 21" torpedo tubes, one 3"gun and two 12mm machine guns. The Sand Lance sank 10 vessels 37368 tons during the war. Modernized and refitted she was lent to Brazil in 1963 and Renamed "Rio Do Sol" 511. Scrapped in 1975.
