Drzewiecki 1879
Stephen Drzewiecki, a Russian Pole, built at St. Petersburg in 1879, a submarine about 19' long with a crew of 4 men. The boat was hand propelled turning a screw but was later converted to electric drive. The boat was considered to be such a success that a further 52 were built. They were armed with external torpedoes and Drzewiecki also designed the release gear.
