MATCH RACING

The stamp from the Aland Island issue on 05 August 1990 depicts the speedy form of “match racing”. The stamp is designed by Martin Morck and is partly based on a photo taken by Dan Ljungsvik. The two yachts have not been identified and also the sail did not give any clue from which class she are.
Sailing has always been very lively in Aland, owing a lot of course to the surrounding waters. Racing with sailing boats is a popular hobby, which makes both young and old take the waves.
The sailing interest is often handed down from generation to generation. This in turn has led to racing as well as spare-time sailing being deeply rooted in the Aland society. During warm and sunny weekends many families take to the sea in their sailing boats. Match racing has grown very popular in Aland with both national and international competitions in the summer months.
