LOMBARDO

Built as an iron hulled paddle steamer in 1841 in Venice for Cia Lombardo Toscana di Nav. a Vapore, Livorno.
Launched as LOMBARDO.
Displacement 729 ton. 239 ton net. Dim. 48.35 x 7.40 x 4.23m.
One steam engine 220 hp manufactured by Maudslay, Sons and Field, London.
Brigantine rigged and fitted with a bowsprit.
Registered in Livorno to take advantage of it favourable custom regime in Tuscan.
After a few owners she was bought in 1846 by Rubattino & Co in 1846.
By this company was she used in the passenger service from Genoa-Leghorn-Civitavecchia and Naples.
1855 Chartered by the Kingdom of Sardinia to transport troops during the Crimean War.
1860 Was she confiscated by Garibaldi’s men together with the PIEMONTE, most probably with the understanding of the owner and company director Giovanni Battista Fauché.
After embarking the troops at Quarto, Genoa under command of Captain Ancona Augusto Elia she sailed with the PIEMONTE to Marsala.
During the landing in Marsala the LOMBARDO grounded.
She stayed in the port of Marsala grounded until July when she was refloated by the men of Garibaldi and towed to the Arsenal in Palermo.
She also was not returned to the owner he received 750.000 Lire compensation for the LOMBARDO, the vessel became a unit of Sicilian Navy.
05 October 1860 Garibaldi used a decree that she also should be preserved along with the PIEMONTE.
In the Sicilian Navy was she used for transporting troops and detainees, Garibaldi complained strongly against this.
In the night of 12 and 13 March 1864 was she wrecked at the Island of San Domino in the Adriatic during stormy weather underway with troops from Ancona to Manfredonia.
Crew and troops were rescued, but the vessel was a total loss.
