In the famous squadron of captains Juan de Santarém and Peru de Escobar, in the service of the Lisbon merchant Fernan Gomez, were two undeservedly forgotten, talented Portuguese navigators: MARTIN FERNANDES(see the stamp3e50c) and ALVARO ESTEVES(see the stamp1e) (About them is information very little). Maybe they took part in the opening of the islands Sao Tome and Principe. In January 1471 they reached the other side of Cape Three Peaks, the earth Ashanti, one of the coveted gold deposits. Next expedition goes to the coast of Nigeria, at least until the lagoon of Lagos, which is today the capital of Nigeria, and perhaps even reached the Niger Delta.
