CARDIGAN BAY

On this airmail envelope of the Netherlands issued in 1998, you can find an old chart from the north part of the west coast of the Netherlands with a sailing vessel. The lower part depict most probably some part of the port of Rotterdam, the tug depict is one of the fleet of Smit, only the container vessel name is readable as CARDIGAN BAY.
The container vessel CARDIGAN BAY was built under yard No 27 by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft at Kiel, Germany for account of Ocean Steam Ship Co. Ltd., Liverpool.
17 March 1972 launched as the CARDIGAN BAY named after the bay forming the west coast of Wales.
Tonnage when built: 58,497 grt, 35,987 net, 48,554 dwt., dim. 289.57 x 32.34 x 24.59m., draught 13.03m. Length bpp.274.0m.
Powered when built by four steam turbines, manufactured by Stal-Laval Turbin A/B Finspang, Sweden, double reduction geared to twin shafts, 81,132 shp, speed 27.5 knots.
Two bowthrusters.
Container capacity 2,961 including 95 reefer containers.
Crew 25.
Built for the UK and Northern Europe to the Far East service.
26 September 1972 delivered and managed by Container Fleets Ltd.
15 January 1973 owners restyled in Ocean Transport and Trading Ltd.
April 1981 fitted out with oil engines by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. Kobe, Japan, two new 8-cyl. 2 S.C.A.Sulzer oil engines, manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, 50,800 bhp, twin shafts, speed 23 knots.
October 1981 management transferred to P&O Containers Ltd.
30 November 1984 sold to Chase Manhattan Bank, and leased to Overseas Containers Ltd., not renamed.
28 May 1986 P&O acquired full control of Overseas Containers Ltd.
28 November 1986 purchased by Overseas Containers Ltd., not renamed.
01 January 1987 owners restyled P&O Containers Ltd.
18 March 1991 sold by P&O Containers Ltd. to Natwest Specialist Finance Ltd. and then leased back.
December 1991 container capacity increased to 3,055 TEU’s
21 April 1996 transferred to Bermuda registry.
02 July 1996 transferred to the East Coast USA to Sri Lanka/Malaysia/Singapore service.
31 December 1996 P&O Containers Ltd. renamed P&O Nedlloyd Ltd.
25 August 1998 transferred to Nat West Leasing (GB) Ltd.
10 February 1999 sold to Fione Shipping Company, St Vincent, for further trading and renamed MARION 2.
02 March 1999 she arrived at Alang, India for demolition.
